Back To Basics 3rd Edition

Just a short little blog to let everyone know about a new book that I found the other day called BACK TO BASICS third edition by Abigail R Gehring. This book has it all for those looking to live the simple life. Part One starts out on how to buy land and then what to do with the land after you buy it. This part goes on to show you how to plan your house. If you don’t what to hire someone to build it for you, you can build it yourself just like the early settlers did with many examples given throughout part one of this book. Many examples are given to teach a person how to cut lumber from logs, clear land, and raise walls of log cabins. My favorite section in part one was called developing a water supply with many tips on how to construct primitive wells to more standard wells. At the end of part one there is a section on fences for the farm, home, pastures, and stockpen. I found part one of this book to be very interesting, some of the sections would be great to try out around the home. Anyone who is a prepper / survivalist should consider this book for part of their library of information. Part one as a whole would be very useful in the event of a grid collapse or major catastrophe. The information is given in a how to format collected from other books and pamphlets.

Hunter’s Edge Survival Tool Unboxing

I recently picked up a new multi tool sold by Savage Arms. The multi tool comes with a nice sheath, the company name embroidered on the top flap. The top flap also has a dome snap button to keep the tool from falling out. At first glance when I took the multi tool out of the sheath I found it to be bulky. Upon further inspection I noticed that there are quite a number of tools on this unit.

Tool List:

  1. Butane Lighter
  2. Savage Accutrigger Adjustment Screwdriver
  3. Can Opener
  4. 1.5 inch drop point knife blade
  5. Cork Screw
  6. 2.5 inch drop point knife blade
  7. Compass that can be removed to insure uninfluenced readings
  8. Whit led light
  9. 6 screwdriver bits including blade phillips and torx stare heads
  10. scissors Savage hes headed bit for the scope mounts 3/32 and action screws 5/32
  11. Lanyard loop
  12. Signal reflector
  13. Rubberized handle
  14. Bottle opener
  15. Punch
  16. Utility hook
  17. Pliers

I will take this multi tool out on a field test at a later date to get a real world feel of how it truly works.

Lanskey Professional Knife Sharpening Kit

I was recently given a Lanskey Professional Knife Sharpening Kit from a good friend. I think that if a person is using a number of knives such as every day pocket knife, survival knife, or just your standard kitchen knives then this is a great maintenance kit for your work bench. The kit comes with five stones that are colour coded so you know what one you are using. Black 70 grit extra coarse, red 120 grit coarse, green 280 grit medium, blue 600 grit fine, & yellow 1000 grit ultra fine. Also included in the kit is the knife clamp, honing oil, & rods that attach to each of the stones. Once the rods are attached to the stones you are able to select the correct angle you want to end up with on your knife blade by placing the rod through one of the four holes on the clamp. The choice of angles are 30, 25, 20, & 17 degree angles. For my Buck Thug knife I selected a 25 degree angle as I believe this angel on my blade will give me a durable edge that will stay sharp for a longer period of time. I also found that damaged areas of a blade can be fixed very easily with the coarse stone, just be careful you don’t remove to much material from the blade. The coarse stone is also a great choice for re-profiling a blade. (selecting a different angle for your blade) Just be sure not to remove to much material from the blade. Once you have set a new angle on your blade you can start to work your way down through the stones making sure to work each side of the blade equally. On your last stone 1000 grit yellow you will be polishing your blade, if you have taken great care through out the process you will end up with a glossy finish on the sharpened part of the blade. I found that holding the knife clamp in my hand was not how I wanted to use this setup so I went out and bought the Lanskey bench clamp with a pedestal on top, so you can attach the knife clamp to it and you will have a solid platform to work on.

Shooter’s Bible

Shooter’s Bible series of books are a great guide for anyone interested in sport shooting or hunting activities. A yearly print that covers many topics such as Ammunition & Ballistics, Reloading, Scopes & Sights, Identification, Prices, and a complete reference section for comparing firearms and calibers. One feature that sets this book off from others like it is a section that takes a look at what they printed exactly 50 years earlier.

Stockman Single Blade by Buck Knives

Stockman Single Blade

Buck Knives

Picked up a new Buck knife today called the Stockman 0302GYS-B.  It has charcoal grey handles with stainless bolsters. This knife will lock open but does not require you to push down on a metal  locking bar to release the blade to fold it back to the folded position. The Stockman is from the slim line series, includes the comfort handle system, and is the largest pocket knife made by Buck. The blade style on this knife is the clip point blade which is great for field dressing game or general use.

Tactical Gear

This past year the firearms business has seen sales leaning toward the tactical market. Lots of new shooters are looking for something different than your grandfathers old Winchester 30-30. Lots of companies have been making there own version of the AR15.( Ruger’s 5.56.) We have seen some new ideas like the JRC (Just Right Carbine) available in 9mm, 40S&W, 45ACP.

Along with all the tactical gear and firearms we have noticed a lot of new tactical magazines show up on our newsstands. One that I have enjoyed reading is titled Tactical Operator not only do they have reviews of rifles pistols and shotguns but they also delve into shooting technique and other non-gun product reviews. The 2nd magazine I have been picking up is titled Tactical Weapons this magazine reviews lots of different tactical weapons and also takes you on adventures with elite tactical teams as they tell what it takes to be a member of their team. The 3rd Magazine that I like to read is called the Back Woodsman. This magazine is perfect for the survival minded person. This magazine has been in print for 33 years and covers a verity of topics, muzzle loading, woods lore, survival, history, homesteading, self-reliance, & primitive living skills. One of the neatest items that I have found out about while reading this magazine is the fire piston. It has the ability to produce an ember from the use of friction that will start a fire by igniting very small tinder.

So that is my 3 top magazines at this time, If I run into any others I will post a short review of it here on this blog.

Leatherman

Leatherman Blast

For the past year I have carried a Leatherman multi tool on my side. The first one that I had was the Fuse. It was a great tool, very strong yet not bulky or clumsy to handle. I chose to move on to the Blast due to it having one more very important tool that I considered a must have for me, and that was the saw.

I have used this multi tool day after day to cut open boxes, adjusting sights on firearms, and many other task. There is not a single tool on the Leatherman Blast that I have not used. The needle nose pliers are awesome, I can squeeze them with as much force as I can apply on them and they do not bend or break.

The Blast is made from 420 high carbon steel , it also has Zytel which is abrasion and scratch resistant material inserted into the handles for comfort.

Tools on this item

1.       Saw

2.       Precision screwdrivers

3.       Small Hallow ground flat screwdriver

4.       Large Hallow ground flat screwdriver

5.       3″ Knife blade

6.       Lanyard loupe

7.       Scissors

8.       Phillips screwdriver

9.       Bottle opener

10.   File

11.   Wire cutter

12.   Wire stripper

13.   Needle Nose Pliers

Blast

All of the tools on this item are lockable.

Now if you are looking to buy the Blast multi tool Leatherman has retired this model but they do have the Wave model available.

Survival Books

SAS Survival Gide

Hello everyone! During my time looking for useful survival items, I have run across a few books that I have read or I intend to read. After all knowledge and planning are key elements to survival. One of books that I have read is the SAS Survival Guide in the Collins gem edition. The information in this book was gained from a 26 year former British SAS member John “Lofty” Wiseman. This guide book is very easy to use and can be packed into everything from a small EDC Bag, Bug Out Bag, or a standard camping pack. The size of the book is 1″ thick 3-1/4″wide by 4-1/2″long. Topics covered by this book include the essentials of survival, climate & terrain, food, camp craft, reading the signs, when and how to move, surviving on the sea, rescue, health, and disaster strategies. When I added this title to my Survival – Camping / Tactical page on Pinterest it became the number one pinned item from my page ( to this date it has 349 repins). Two other books that I will be reading in the near future are Les Stroud’s Survive!, and Doomsday Preppers Complete Survival Manual by National Geographic.

Maxpedition Versa Pack G.T.G S-TYPE

Maxpedition Versa Pack

Hello everyone it’s been a long time since I last made a post on this site so I just wanted to take some time to tell people about a bag I bought this past summer. Back in June I was in the market for a bag that I could take out on hikes and day trips. The pack that I was looking for had to be small with a few compartments. I looked at a number of pack and my final decision was Maxpediton’s Fatboy G.T.G S-Type (Good to Go Left Side).

Survival Products-004

When I am not out on the go and just have the pack sitting around I have it ready as a small very basic go bag. In this setup the side zipper compartment will have two energy bars, a small bag of trail mix, ear plugs, and a spare bite valve for my camel back eddy water bottle. The opposite side has a round open compartment with a retention cord to hold a drink bottle. Inside of the lid of the main compartment to the front I keep a Rite in the Rain all weather Mini Notebook (Sample), to the top I keep a small camera bag with Band-Aids small cardboard matches in one compartment and in the other compartment I have a selection of bear bangers and flares. Open the lid and on the front of the pack and there is an open compartment where I have a Buck 750 Redpoint also in there I keep my Zippo hand warmer. Next is a zipper compartment where I have pen launcher for bear bangers and flares, Browning Alpha Max flash light, Body Guard Dog Repellent, Advil liquid gels, standard Bic lighter, identification card wrapped with duct tape, and small travel Polysporin. In the main compartment I have a KA-BAR Knife- Fork-Spoon, 2nd small bag of trail mix, two Coghlan’s orange light sticks, and Bushnell H2O Binocular. The very back of this pack has a compartment that is for CWC. (Concealed Weapon Carry) The Laws in the province that I live in do not permit me to carry a firearm for protection at any time, so I keep a cheap light stick in there. On the shoulder strap I keep my Buck Thug attached with its sheath.

My decision to buy  the left side carry version has enabled me to carry this bag to my left side and sling a rifle/shotgun on my right shoulder without the two getting caught up on each other. With the basic setup I have described above I still have room for two boxes of rifle ammunition or two boxes of shotgun shells. This pack is a must for anyone who goes out hunting for hours at a time without hauling a big pack on their back.

In August of this past summer I took a trip out to some islands in Lake Nipissing with my 2-1/2 year old son and needed a diaper go bag. In seconds I can take off the Buck Knife and sheath, empty out the main compartment and replace my water bottle with baby bottle. Add four diapers and snacks for child and we are good to go!
