Notes From the Field

Walk in the woods

Today was a great day for a walk in the woods and that’s just what my son and I were up to this afternoon.  My parents have a good size farm and there are two bush lots located there.  On our way to one of the bush lots I noticed some objects off in the distance, I continued walking and looked up for them again and this time they had moved. I reached for my Bushnell binoculars and saw that the black objects were turkeys!  In total there were 6-8 of them and there may have been more as they were crossing a fence line and moving out of view. We continued walking toward the bush across the ploughed field, my son is only 3 years old and was making great time. The field was covered in snow and had a nice crust of frozen ground under that. When we came to the edge of the bush I located a spot where the fence was down and we went into the bush. We went in about 15 yards and noticed some tracks in the snow, they appeared to be deer tracks. We followed the tracks for a few yards and then something caught my eye. The ground had been disturbed and by the looks of it, it was fresh. Upon closer inspection we saw that the tracks led right up to this spot and my conclusion was we were looking at a deer scrape.  We followed the tracks for about 10 minutes and then called it a day. We came back out of the bush and decided to have a sit down break for a few minutes as we were sitting down in the fence row I spotted a hawk flying around it stayed around just long enough for my son to see it. the hawk  made a couple of loud screeches and then disappeared off into the distance.
